Since Jewelry is one of the most popular gifts for sweethearts, now is the perfect time to verify protection for valuables both new and existing. One of my clients recently visited Spain and returned with several unique paintings with a combined value of several thousand dollars. She wisely informed me of her purchase and we added the items to her policy for the appropriate value. We also stored copies of her appraisals confirming the value of each painting. Now if a claim occurs, there will be no problem because everything is accounted for and verified.

It is very important to keep all your valuables secure and let your professional agent know when you make purchases so the records can be up to date when a loss occurs. This not only helps your sense of security but makes claims payments much faster and easier when the unexpected happens.

When you need an independent professional agent who pays attention to the details, contact me. I enjoy meeting new clients everyday and working to help protect all the valuables in your life.
Will you be able to see Him? Probably not and here is why.
By the time you hear his sleigh and reindeer, he will be long gone because speed is critical! This chart will give you perspective on just how quick he is and help explain to the "little ones" why he can be so hard to see when he visits.

When you have "recovered" from his visit, contact me and go over your list is new; jewelry, art, and other valuables. No, I am not just "nosey", they may need to be listed on your homeowners policy to establish coverage for high value items. Anyway a review is always in order and that's a good way to start the "New Year"!
The GreeneAgent says:

The first of our "Holiday Rush" events will come on Monday this year. Kids on the street at dusk can be dangerous so take a little extra time an pre-caution to be safe and keep them safe. Just a few simple tips can pay big dividends for everyne . So have a great time on this holiday but stay safe!

Halloween Safe-Driving Tips

According to Safe Kids USA, children are twice as likely to be killed by a vehicle on Halloween compared to other days of the year. Take extra caution behind the wheel on Halloween and use the following driving tips to keep trick-or-treaters safe.

Yield to Trick-or-Treaters: Be prepared for children to run into the street at anytime.

Refrain From Passing Idle Vehicles: You never know when the driver in front of you has stopped to drop children off. Be patient and take extra caution when traveling near other vehicles.

Park Your Mobile Phone: With children crowding the dark roads, it is especially important to avoid any distractions while behind the wheel.

Communicate With Other Drivers: Use hazard lights when picking-up or dropping-off trick-or-treaters. And, always use turn signals.

Consider Alternate Routes: Avoid driving near trick-or-treaters by taking routes that go around busy neighborhoods, not through them.

The GreeneAgent says:

Fact #1
You know how they say there are only two guarantees in life, and taxes is one of them? Well, this about the other one. To be clear....death. It's perfectly okay that looking at this subject might make you uneasy. But planning for the end does not make it come sooner, in fact it might even have the opposite effect---one less thing to worry about. Being able to decide right now how you want your family to live, and how you want to be remembered, might be challenging, probably will require some time and maybe even professional advice, but it's also empowering even liberating.

The Good News? There doesn't have to be any bad news.

When you start talking about life and what comes after you're gone, stay positive and upbeat. After all, it's not your imminent demise you're talking about. You're simply taking advantage of this moment and this opportunity to help secure your family's future and a particular way of being remembered. If your're having the conversation with a spouse, you might learn things about each other that surprise and delight you. Maybe the idea of someday "downsizing" your home and lifestyle would be desirable. Perhaps this is your opportunity to leave money to causes that have always been dear to your heart but that you weren't able to give a big enough place in your budget. Just as with planning for retirement, planning how your family will carry on and how you'll be remembered is up to you.

You can put your money where your heart is!

Too often when we think about finances--wheter short or long term-- we jump straight into the nuts and bolts insteado thinking about what kind of opportunity we really have. If family is the most important thing in your life, isn't this an opportunity to show it? Certainly you do your best to provide for their current needs, but this is your chance to be proactive about their future. Do you have a savings account or college fund? Do your "most important things" occupy an equally important place in your budget? Have you made sure that your're not leaving your family in debt or struggling? These are questions workth thinking about and - if you haven't already--doing something about.

If you need to have these conversations with someone who understands and can help you with planning call me for an appointment. Sometimes these important conversations are more comfortable at home so the GreeneAgent makes "house calls".
Off To College: Driving Safety Tips

It's time to go back to college! Share these valuable driving safety tips with your college students as they load up their cars and head back to college.

Avoid Cramming, Pack Right. Even though your son or daughter will try to fit every last piece of dorm room equipment into the car, make sure whoever is driving is able to see out of the rearview mirror despite a fully packed car. Nothing should be packed above seat level in order to avoid projectile movement of objects if the need to stop short arises. Pack right by making two trips or shipping what will not fit safely in the car.

Take a Break. Whether you or child is driving, make sure to plan to take stops and break up your drive if it is a long one.

Conduct a Car Check. Check headlights, oil, turn signals, and tires before letting your son or daughter embark on their journey to college. You never know when these vehicle essentials may break down!

Keep Your Eyes Peeled For Pedestrians. All college campuses experience an increase in the number of pedestrians walking around. Remind your son or daughter to yield to pedestrians and to never pass a car that is stopped at a cross walk.

Always Lock up! College students often forget that urban areas of college campuses are not as safe as their parents' driveway. Remind your son or daughter to never leave valuables in the car and always lock the car.

Practice Safe Driving, Take the Test!
Raise awareness about safe driving and let your policyholders test their driving knowledge by reminding them to take the test! Your customers will be able to share and compare their scores with family and friends, and see just how their distracted driving habits measure up. Whether it's on your Facebook page, blog, Twitter account, or company website, the National Drivers Test initiates great conversation and will grow your business within your community.
If your heart skips a beat when your teenager leaves the driveway, you are not alone. Surviving the teegage years is sometimes more difficult for the parent than it is for the teen. Knowing your individual teens personality, habits and maturity level helps you know what rules to set and how to keep them "as safe as possible" when they drive. If you are setting some "rules for the road" the following info may help ease the pain on the realtionship when you see what other parents are doing. Those first three to four years are critical so stay engaged and help them become a "Safe Driver"!

Tips for Parents with Teenage Drivers, from GMAC Insurance

According to the GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test, what restrictions are parents putting on their teenage drivers to help them be safer drivers?

Sixty-four percent of parents are imposing the "no mobile devices while driving" rule.

About 50 percent of parents implement a driving curfew.

About 35 percent of parents allow their teenagers to drive only locally and restrict them from driving on any highways.

Thirty-two percent of parents don't allow their teenagers to drive with friends in the car.

Twenty-two percent of parents allow their teenagers to drive only if a parent is with them.

Only nine percent of parents don't impose any driving restrictions on their teenage drivers.

New car shopping can be a lot of fun, especially if you’re a car enthusiast. But others can find the experience stressful and tedious. Either way, there’s a lot to think about. According to a survey of car shoppers, overall purchase price is the most important factor when shopping for a new car (46 percent), followed by make and model (31 percent).

Safety and performance come in a distant third, tied at seven percent. But whether you’re turned on or turned off by the dizzying array of car choices, trim options, “expert” reviews, incentives and other deals, it definitely pays to approach car buying strategically.

So if you’re in the market for a new vehicle and you find yourself having trouble keeping a clear head, just keep these strategies, courtesy of COMMUNITY INSURANCE in mind:

1. Decide how much money you can spend and what type of vehicle best suits your needs. Just looking for the basic transport capability of a small or medium sedan? Or do you need the hauling capacity of a van or SUV? Something practical? Something sporty? Something in between?

2. Research crash tests and accident data available from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

3. Shop around for financing. If you can, apply for and get approval for a loan from a bank, credit union or other financier before you even visit the dealership. Being a “cash buyer” gives you an advantage when you do finally meet with the dealership’s financing person.

4. Test drive the car. Try to drive in conditions that will be similar to those under which you’ll drive every day.

5. Check pricing for your desired make and model at two or three dealerships and use that information to help you negotiate the best deal.

6. Get a firm quote, in writing. This should include not only the cost of the car, but any fees and the sales tax.

7. Inspect your new car carefully before driving off the lot. Make sure all the options you’ve ordered are included and that the body and paint are free of scratches or dents.

Finally, it’s important to consider the cost of auto insurance, although it seems that few people realize that what they pay for insurance can add significantly to the vehicle’s total cost.

Wise car buyers know to shop around for insurance and find out how costs compare. They also know to visit an independent insurance agency – like Community Insurance. We can check with several companies to find the best combination of coverage and price.

The GreeneAgent says:

If you are on the road this summer or planning a trip to your favorite destination, and are new to RV'ing here are some basics you need to know.

Top Five RV-Driving Safety Tips

Have a Copilot. You may think the mirrors will be enough to help guide you, but it can never hurt to enlist an extra pair of eyes even when you're backing up, going down narrow roads or turning sharp corners.

"Easy Does It" on the Brakes. The airbrakes in an RV feel very different compared to hydraulic brakes in cars. There's a slight delay when applying airbrakes. Prevent sudden stops by not jamming hard on the RV brakes to overcompensate for this delay.

Follow the "Rule of 20 Percent." RVs take longer to come to a full stop and they accelerate slower. Always add 20 percent whether you're extending your following distance or merging into traffic.

Know Your Propane Tank System. Don't travel with the oven, stove or burners lit. Install a propane gas detector. And, never refuel the engine when a propane appliance is running.

Know Your Height. It sounds straightforward, but many drivers often forget about the height of their RV. Some of the most common RV accidents occur when RVers run into overpasses. To remind yourself of your RV's height and weight, write it down on a piece of paper and keep it near the dash and visible.

The GreeneAgent says:

Summertime heat can be deadly, but a little precaution can make fun outings special times to remember. To see if you are "thinking right" about beating the heat, check out these recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC recommends… “Drink more fluids (nonalcoholic), regardless of your activity level. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink.”

Keep plenty of water with you and make sure the kids stay hydrated when they are playing. A small thermos of tap water will save you $$ over the bottles from the convenience store.

The CDC recommends… “Don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugar–these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also, avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.”

Sometimes the kids say the water just don't taste so good, but nothing satisfies the thirst from summer heat better. If you are involved in activities, don't drink ice water.

The CDC recommends… “Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.”

Ok, it may be hard to be stylish and get this part exactly right! But if you are in the ER from the heat, your style won't impress the nurse!

The CDC recommends… “If you must be out in the heat, limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours.”

This can be the hardest part, but it is serious. Even if you are acclimated to the summer heat, the midday is the most dangerous time so keep it for the least activity you can.

The CDC recommends… “Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat,…sunglasses and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher…”

I'm not the best at this (thank goodness my wife is) but it is important. Tomorrow's sunburn pain is not a pleasant thought and serious burns can have lasting effects.

Fun and Safety go Hand n' Hand!

Fun and safety can go together and in fact they should. A trip to the emergency room in the middle of your July 4th Holiday is no fun at all. Most everyone loves Fireworks from a distance but up close they can pose real danger.
CPSC’s annual death and injury report on fireworks also indicates that approximately 40 percent of estimated injuries occurred to children younger than 15 years of age. In addition, CPSC received reports of three fatalities related to fireworks.
“From purchase to ignition, know how you and your family can stay safe and which fireworks are allowed in your state if fireworks are part of your July 4th celebration,” said CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. “Never assume that a fireworks device is safe based on its size and never allow young children to play with or light fireworks. By knowing the dangers of all types of fireworks, consumers can prevent tragedies.”

Plan your Holiday Celebration with plenty of fun activities and be sure to include safety in your plans. There will be much more fun if you do!

If you are concerned about being properly insured when guests arrive, have a discussion with your Professional Agent, or call Bill @ 888.607.2640 for an appointment to review your coverage.

If you are reading this, thank you. You are contributing to a little break from the routine of "activity frenzy". Serving clients is my passion but refresh one must and after all it is Friday evening! I encourage you to speak with your insurance professional about the details of your coverage as I have uncovered several instances of missing and in-correct insurance limits this week. Some are glaring mistakes and others just failure to review properly when policies have existed for a period of years. Having the right protection when disaster comes is certainly the reason you work with a professional. If you haven't had a review lately, contact your agent or call me for an appointment to walk thru the "insurance lingo" and confirm that things really are "OK".
Be sure to have someone check on your property if you are leaving for vacation. One client this week returned to a flooded home, not from the rain but her washing machine. It had malfunctioned, even though it was off, and flooded the utility, hallway and bedroom. What a mess!
It is a good idea to turn off the water coming into the house when you leave to assure you don't return to a "nightmare". That is no way to end a vacation.

Are you one of them?

This year, our office is teaming up with GMAC Insurance to ask the American driving public this very question and encourage people to take a test that will help keep the rules of the road and safe driving habits on their minds.

It's all part of the 7th Annual GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test. This year's results will be revealed on May 26th, right before Memorial Day weekend - the start of the summer driving season. We're partnering with GMAC Insurance for this fun and simple way to refresh your driving credentials and make you a better, safer driver. Follow the link below and see where you stand.
Listen to the local radio for up-to-date information. Stay out of damaged buildings. If you’re in an evacuated area, don’t return to your home until local authorities report that it’s safe. When you survey your home, check first for damage to gas, electric or sewage systems. Don’t use damaged systems until they’ve been checked by professionals. If gas is leaking, turn it off at the main shut-off valve, leave the building immediately and call a professional for service. Watch out for broken glass and sharp objects. If you must drive, use caution. Look out for downed wires and debris, and
remember bridges and roads may be damaged. Call your companies claim number direct for fastest response or call our office at 888.607.2640 for personal assistance.
If you have storm damage, report it as soon as possible. During this first call, you should be ready to provide at least a general description of your damage. A representative will talk you through your claim, recording the details. A claims professional will call you after you’ve reported your claim. Most of the time
your claims professional is able to make contact with you within 72 hours. If you have serious damage, we will make every effort to get to you first.

If a storm has caused damage to your property, it is your responsibility to take
action to avoid further damage, once it is safe to do so. Heavy rains often accompany tornados and wind storms. The longer your home is exposed to water, the more damage you’ll see to your roof, ceiling, walls and floors — as well as any personal belongings you have inside. If you can, cover holes in the roof or broken windows with heavy-duty tarps or plywood to prevent additional water damage. Move wet items to drier ground. Wash and dry whatever you can. If you’re not sure it’s safe for you to do any of this the work, professionals can help. You’ll usually find them listed under “contractors” or “water damage restoration” in your phone directory. Make sure to save receipts from any temporary fixes as part of documenting your damage.
Call us anytime you have questions about your coverage.

If we haven’t reviewed or updated your coverage in the past 24 months, be proactive and call 423.638.1422 or contact me at brichards@greatci.com for an appointment.
What is my home worth? Market value versus reconstruction costs.
Many homeowners equate the "worth" of a home to its market value, especially if the home was a recent purchase. While market value is a valid calculation of a home's worth for buying and selling, it has little to do with the cost of rebuilding. The estimate you are providing is the amount to reconstruct the home at today's costs.

Why is reconstruction cost more expensive than new construction?
Rebuilding a home includes many factors and expenses not considered in new construction.

Economies of scale

It costs more for a contractor to build one home at a time because materials are not purchased in bulk. A single household item that matches the one that's been destroyed will nearly always cost more than if it had been part of a larger purchase.

Top-down versus
bottom-up

Repair work for a partially destroyed home is done from the top of the home down. This is more time consuming and labor-intensive.

Demolition and
debris removal

This step is necessary before reconstruction can begin and adds to the total cost.

Use of labor

When a builder constructs many homes at once, they can efficiently schedule labor for carpenters, plumbers, electricians and other workers. For a single rebuild, labor is not as efficient and contributes to higher costs.

Access to worksite

Worksite access is easier for brand new construction. For reconstruction, obstacles such as neighboring homes, trees, lawns, fences and other landscaping prevent easy site access. This makes it difficult to transport materials and can drive up labor costs.

Building code changes

Changes to building codes may require costly updating, even for undamaged parts of a home. This could include updating wiring or other utilities and is costly, especially for older homes.

Natural disasters

After a natural disaster, the costs of building materials and labor rise because of increased demand. Over the past 20 years, there has been a significant increase in the frequency and severity of weather events, resulting in a high number of losses that require repairs.

Protecting undamaged parts
of the home and contents

Keeping a partially destroyed home from further damage until permanent repairs can be made adds to the overall cost. This could involve covering a damaged roof or holes in walls.

Specialized labor
is more costly

Reconstruction is often completed by contractors who specialize in rebuilding as opposed to new construction contractors. Their specialized labor tends to be more expensive.

            methods and materials

A standard homeowners policy provides for replacement with like kind and quality, which means replicating a home as it stands today. In older homes, interior walls are often made of plaster instead of drywall and exterior brick walls are made of solid brick instead of modern brick veneer. Homes constructed prior to 1940 were built with full dimensional lumber, which is larger and more costly than typical modern lumber. Because of features and materials such as these, older homes, especially those built prior to 1940, cost more to replace. In addition, the rising cost of commodities contributes to higher reconstruction costs. For example, petroleum based materials such as shingles have increased in cost dramatically.

It’s that time of year again. The weather is getting warmer and you just can’t wait to get out on your bike. But, it’s been in storage all winter. So what do you need to do to get it road ready again? Here are a few quick tips on getting your motorcycle out of winter storage and ready to ride.

Before you start, you’ll need to remove the cover and any locks you used to secure the bike. If the bike is up on stands, lower it down to a position where you can work on it easily and safely. After that, use the following checklist to be sure your motorcycle is in good working order and ready to go before you take it out on the road.

· Clean the entire motorcycle with a mild detergent and water solution. Remove any metal protecting agents.

· Remove any plastic or rubber covers that you put on the air box intakes, exhaust pipes and air box drain.

· Make sure the battery is in good condition and fully charged. Be sure the vent hose is connected and routed properly.

· Drain and replace the oil that was in the engine while the bike was in storage. Replace the oil filter if applicable.

· Lubricate all areas as instructed in the operator’s manual.

· Change the spark plugs.

· Check the engine coolant and be sure it is at the proper level. Replace it if necessary.

· If the bike is chain driven, inspect the chain and drive sprockets for excessive wear or loosening. Adjust if necessary.

· If your bike is shaft-driven, inspect the oil level in the final drive unit. Make sure it is filled to the proper level.

· Inspect the tires. Tires should not have cracks, bulges or excessive wear. Also tires should be inflated to the proper manufacturer’s specifications.

· Inspect the brake pads or shoes. If they show excessive wear, they should be replaced.

· If your bike is equipped with hydraulic brakes, check the fluid level to ensure it is at the proper level. Most manufacturers recommend changing this fluid at least once a season to eliminate moisture in the master brake cylinders. Moisture can cause corrosion and eventual brake failure. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation on fluid type.

· Inspect coolant hoses and brake lines for signs of deterioration or cracking. Replace if necessary.

· Inspect all cables for ease of operation. Sticking, binding or broken cables should be replaced.

· Inspect all electrical accessories for proper operation. Check the headlight, turn signals, reverse lights, horn and kill switch. Correct any problems.

· Before starting the engine, slowly crank it over with the kick starter and listen for any abnormal noises. Also check for smooth movement.

· Do a complete inspection of the bike. Then start it and let it run for a few minutes in a well-ventilated area. If there are any abnormal noises or anything seems unusual, have your bike checked out by a factory-trained mechanic.

· Use a fuel system cleaner additive for a couple tanks.

· Take the motorcycle safety class you signed up for.

According to a nationwide analysis by Safeco Insurance, one out of every 10 water-damage claims can be traced back to a malfunctioning hot water tank or washing machine. These two appliances are more likely than Mother Nature to inflict damage on the home.

"Water is the most common cause of home damage today – even more likely than fire," said Jim Swegle, vice president of personal property for Safeco Insurance.

"Americans are spending twice what they were 10 years ago to repair water damage. In most cases, home owners can save themselves a lot of time and money by adding a few simple protective devices and doing routine maintenance. These tasks usually take just a few minutes and the parts often cost less than $20," Swegle said.

Some water damage is covered under homeowners insurance, but some damage is not, he noted. Home owners who fail to maintain appliances and plumbing systems may face thousands of dollars in repair costs and weeks of invasive home repairs.

Simple fixes, such as installing a $10 stainless steel hose or replacing an aging water heater, could save a homeowner thousands of dollars and a lot of hassle.

But home owners can take simple steps to reduce their chances of water damage.

<dir><dir>

Replace old water heaters. Water heaters do damage when they get too old and the tank rusts and bursts. Replace your tank once a decade. Today's energy-efficient systems also will be cheaper to operate.

Stainless steel hoses: Inspect standard rubber or plastic hoses used with washing machines, refrigerators and dishwashers and consider replacing them with stainless steel-braided or mesh hoses. Worn-out hoses with kinks, cracks or bulges need to be replaced immediately. A $10 braided steel hose can save thousands.

Turn it off before you leave. Don't leave dishwashers and washing machines running if you leave the house.

</dir></dir>

Check attic air conditioners. At least once a year, go up to the attic or roof to check these appliances before they wear out. Look for wear and tear and loose connections.

When You*re on the Road, Put Safety First!

Know the law.
Check with the area Department of Motor Vehicles to find out what the laws say about operating your vehicle and required safety gear where you will be riding.

Be prepared.
Make sure you and your bike are properly licensed and insured. And don*t take unnecessary risks with unfavorable road conditions such as wet pavement. Oils from other vehicles and moisture make pavement very slick. Read and carry your owner*s manual along with a small tool kit when you*re riding.

Gear up.
Always be sure you and your passengers wear protective gear. A helmet, eye protection, a sturdy jacket, long pants, boots and gloves are your best bet for optimum protection. Review proper riding techniques with your passengers.

Stand out.
Brightly colored clothing can help make other drivers aware of you. While you*re riding, use your headlight, avoid other vehicles* blind spots, drive carefully and be prepared to use your horn.

Distance yourself.
Always leave enough space between you and the vehicle in front of you. That might be your only way out if the car behind you fails to stop in time. When turning, start on the outside of the curve to give yourself additional visibility and increase your safe space.

Position yourself.

Make the left wheel track of a 4-wheeled vehicle your main lane position. However, when following another vehicle or coming to a stop, move to the right so you are more conspicuous and have space to exit if you need it.

Ride defensively.
Most collisions occur because the driver of the car didn*t see the motorcycle. That*s why it pays to scan around you * in front, to the side and behind. Note what*s around you and be prepared to react. Watch for cars waiting to turn left across your path at intersections.

Be sharp.
Ride only when your senses are sharp. Never do drugs or drink and then drive. Up to 45% of all fatal motorcycle accidents involve alcohol. Always take time to get enough rest when out on long trips.

Check it out.
Make sure your bike is running properly before riding. Always check mirrors, tire pressure, fuel level, gauges and suspension. Follow the recommended service schedule for your bike, and be sure to have all repairs made by an authorized service provider.

You never ride long enough or become experienced enough to disregard safety, but with a focus on safety and defensive driving techniques, you will “ride longer” and live to get more experience and pleasure from your motorcycle

By Andy Fulford, product manager, Progressive

Your vehicle insurance could be as much as 40 percent of your total operating budget. A Regular policy review is essential in making sure you have the right insurance for your truck—and your business. Plus, you could save big buck if you qualify for additional discounts.

To get started, ask yourself these five questions—then give your local agent a call.

1. Are all of my employees covered when they drive my trucks, even if they’re not listed on my policy?

You should always list employees who regularly drive your vehicles. Ask your insurance company if it covers temporary drivers as long as they have your permission to operate the vehicle.

Some insurance companies will only cover drivers who are named on the policy. So, if you regularly employ temporary workers, you need to call your insurer and add them to the policy every time they drive to ensure they’ll be covered in an accident.

Permissive use policies don’t require you to add temporary workers.

2. Will my policy pay to repair my employees’ personal vehicles if they get into an accident while running a business errand?

If you often send employees on business errands in their personal cars or trucks, or, if you use rental vehicles, consider adding optional coverages to your policy to protect those vehicles. In many cases, a standard commercial auto insurance policy won’t cover damages in case of an accident. Your agent or insurance company can walk you through all of your options.

3. Should I maintain my policy during the off-season if I’m not using my truck?

When the season’s over, consider switching to Comprehensive-only coverage instead of canceling your policy altogether. This coverage protects your vehicles against incidents like vandalism or hail that can happen when they’re sitting for long periods during the off-season.

If you do decide to cancel your Liability insurance, check with the Department of Motor Vehicles first. There may be some additional steps you need to take to comply with the insurance laws in your state.

4. How quickly does my insurance company resolve claims?

Find out how long, on average, it takes your insurer to resolve claims. The faster they take care of your claim, the faster you can get back to work.

Also, ask if your insurance will cover a rental vehicle or provide downtime payments.

That way, if your truck’s out of commission, your business will stay profitable.

5. What can I do to control my insurance expenses?

Discounts can make a big difference, especially with commercial insurance. Progressive offers several, like an experienced business owner discount and a discount if you have a General Liability or Business Owner’s Policy. Other ways that you can save include increasing your deductibles and paying your premium in full.

(NAPS)—This time of year, thoughts turn to year-end financial matters: paying holiday bills, preparing your tax return and more. It’s also a great time to review the general state of your finances to see if you need to make any changes in the coming year. Many people don’t consider the importance of insurance in an overall financial plan. But the fact is, no matter how hard you work to build wealth, failure to purchase adequate insurance can be your undoing.

On the other hand, paying for coverage you don’t need can also sap your budget. Finding the right balance can be a challenge. That’s why now is a good time to sit down with an independent insurance agent and review your needs. Think of an insurance agent as a vital information source, one that can help think through an individual situation and can put together a package of policies, coverage and price that meets specific needs. An independent agent can ask the right questions to help better determine the kind of insurance needed. Because an independent agent can check prices from many different companies, he or she can help get the maximum coverage at reasonable cost.

Here are just a few of the questions to ask an independent agent as you consider an overall financial plan:

What type of policy is right for me? This depends on factors such as budget, the amount of coverage needed and the level of service you want from an insurance company. Finding the appropriate level of coverage is important. You don’t want to overpay for coverage not needed, but you also want to keep in mind that the worst experience is to have a claim, then discover there’s not enough coverage.

How do rates from different companies compare? Independent agents are licensed to represent multiple insurance companies, so they can shop multiple companies to get the coverage you need at an attractive price.

Are there other ways to save? As a person’s situation evolves—he or she gets married, has kids, buys a new car—check in with an independent agent. Companies offer various discounts for such life changes, and this information could help the agent find additional savings.

Did You Know? Finding the right insurance balance—adequate coverage that doesn't include items you don’t need—can be a challenge, but an independent insurance agent can help.

Have a practical plan in case of a fire

Fire happens unexpectedly, and many times in the middle of the night when a family is sleeping. That’s why it’s
important to have an escape plan in place. If a fire breaks out, you’ll need to react from practice, not panic.
Make a rough sketch of your home’s floor plan and follow these tips:

Schedule home fire drills often

• Practice family fire drills so no one is confused about what to do.

• Plan at least two different escape routes from each room and designate a meeting place outside your

home, such as the mailbox.

• Assign someone to help young and elderly people. Instruct children they must get outside. Teach them

the worst thing they can do is hide in closets or under beds.

Keep fire extinguishers handy

• Store a multi-purpose fire extinguisher in the kitchen and another one near your furnace to be used to

quickly douse a fire before it gets out of control.

• Make sure they’re dry-chemical extinguishers, suitable for class A, B and C fires. Teach all family

members how to operate them.

• Always keep extinguishers recharged and ready to use.

Prepare your windows for fast escape

• Remove any installation clips from the outside of your windows. Your home should have two exterior

doors and a quick-exit window in each bedroom.

• To exit from a window, slide it up or sideways and remove the screen. Kick the screen out if you need to.

• If your home has crank-out style jalousie or awning quick-exit windows, remove the interior storm sash

by turning the pivot clips. Trip the exit latches at the window sill and slide the window open. Or, open it

at the hinges and make your exit. If there’s no trip latch on the window or no time to open it, break it

with a chair, lamp or shoe and get out. Watch out for sharp glass.

Take action if a fire strikes

• If you can douse a fire quickly using your extinguisher, go ahead. Otherwise, don’t try to fight your

own fire. Leave immediately and call for help from a neighbor’s home.

• Crawl to the nearest safe exit because the clearest air is 12 to 24 inches above the floor.

Remember that insurance adjusters are people, too. Each one of them has a life outside their job, just like you do. Adjusters have families, pets and relatives. Treat them like you would want to be treated.

Insurance adjusters have specialized training to do what they do. Not just anyone can slap a tag on his/her jacket and him/herself an adjuster. Adjusters must go through classes and training. They must pass specialized state tests in order to be a certified adjuster.

When an adjuster is evaluating your property for damage and repair, he/she is just doing a job. They have no personal connection to you or your insurance agent. He/She is working to get the best possible repair for you and the insurance company.

The adjuster is similar to a middle man. He/She will get your views and combine those views with the interests of the insurance company. Adjusters may also have to evaluate other companies and/or people involved. After collecting and evaluating all of this information, the adjuster will make an informed decision that benefits both you and your insurance company.

For the most part, the adjuster is your friend. Talk honestly and candidly with the adjuster to make sure he/she understands your point of view clearly. He/She will feel freer to work directly with the insurance company to help you achieve a positive claim experience.

As the birds were being loaded cage by cage on a flatbed, the driver noticed a rather large and feisty Tom that kept staring at him and kicking loose feathers as he walked around the truck. Along the journey the driver stopped in a small town and grabbed a quick cup of coffee. He climbed back in the cab and proceeded to drive down the main street when suddenly he was attacked by a flurry of “Turkey Fury”! Somehow the sneaky Tom had managed to escape from his cage and was bent on taking his anger out on the driver.

Startled, the driver swerved and struck a power pole. The flatbed full of live turkeys rolled on its side in a ditch breaking loose the confined turkeys that immediately ran for freedom. It was getting close to dusk and the local Fire Department assisted in rounding up almost all of the turkeys. Eventually most of the birds were sent on their way to become Thanksgiving Dinners.

All except the renegade Tom that had caused the wreck in the first place and escaped from the scene of the crime.

The local paper posted the story and everyone was on the lookout for Tom but he was nowhere to be found. Time passed and it was just two days until Christmas. A local police officer was making his midnight rounds of the town’s main street when suddenly his headlights shone on a strange shape strutting right down the idle of the road. It was the missing Tom Turkey! The officer stopped his patrol car and the bold bird jumped up onto his hood as if to say, “OK, I give up”

The patrolman took the bird home to his ranch with plans to make a Christmas Dinner out of the bird. However, as word spread that “Terrible Tom” had been captured the local grade school children asked that he be spared in the spirit of the season. He now resides at a local High School Ag Department and has his own flock of hens to keep him company.

According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), about six out of 10 (57 percent) highway deaths occur on rural roads. People tend to feel more relaxed with less traffic and people, but don’t realize that rural roads have many of their own risks. Rural roads have their own characteristics that create potentially dangerous driving situations. Stay alert for these conditions and learn what to do if you should encounter them.

Road Conditions

Unpaved – Dirt or gravel roads provide less traction, which can cause drivers to get stuck or lose control of their car, plus they can reduce visibility when dry and dusty. Ruts and washboards can complicate driving even more.

Slow down.

Avoid sharp turns.

Leave extra distance between your car and those ahead of you.

Stay off shoulders.

Keep tires out of ruts and cross ruts at an angle.

Use four-wheel drive.

Narrow – Be aware of the width of the road you’re on. Less space means less room for passing safely.

When approaching an oncoming vehicle on a narrow road, pull over to give adequate passing room.

If no shoulder is available, slow down, stop or back up to a safe spot to allow the other to pass.

Unmarked – Lack of signs or accurate maps may make navigation difficult.

Consider carrying a compass, GPS and the most current maps when traveling on rural roads.

Fill your fuel tank since gas stations may be unavailable.

Have a spare tire, jack, flashlight and other emergency supplies in case your car breaks down or you get a flat tire.

Don’t rely on cell phone service – always tell someone where you’re going and what time you’ll be back.

Traction – Different road surfaces require different speeds to remain safe. Here are a few examples of surfaces you may encounter. As you move down the list, you need to drive at slower speeds and with more caution to maintain control:

Dry concrete

Dry asphalt

Wet asphalt

Gravel

Snow or ice

Changing Landscapes

Blind Curves and Dips – These can prevent you from seeing oncoming traffic by creating blind spots in the road ahead.

Slow down.

Keep to the far right when approaching curves.

Watch for dust indicating approaching traffic.

Steep Grades – Steep roads can put a heavier demand on your brakes, which can cause overheating and possible failure.

Shift to a lower gear, which will reduce your need to use the brakes.

On more level stretches, avoid using brakes so they can cool down.

If towing or approaching sharp curves, lower your speed so you can stop without skidding if necessary.

Turn off your air conditioning to keep your engine temperature cool.

Obstacles

The following obstacles can be hazards on rural roads. Pay attention to your surroundings and be prepared to slow down or stop on short notice.

Unmarked Driveways and Entrances – Trees, bushes, walls and other objects may prevent you from seeing driveways and cars that are pulling out of them.

Trucks – Semi-trucks are hard to see around. They require wider turns and take longer to stop.

Slow-Moving Vehicles – Tractors or other farm equipment may slow traffic down.

Animals – Deer, raccoons, birds and other wildlife are more abundant on rural roads. Be aware of them crossing or on the side of the road, especially at night.

Pedestrians and Bicycles – There may be little to no shoulder available, so be prepared to slow down and get into the other lane if possible to give them extra room.

Preparing your vehicle for the winter season now will help ensure your vehicle is in good working order when you need it most.

Have a mechanic check the following items on your vehicle: battery; wipers and windshield washer fluid; antifreeze; ignition system; thermostat; lights; exhaust system; flashing hazard lights; heater; brakes; defroster and oil level.

Install good winter tires. Make sure the tires have adequate tread. All-weather radials are usually adequate for most winter conditions. You may also want to carry a set of tire chains in your vehicle for heavy snow conditions.

Keep a windshield scraper and small broom for ice and snow removal (you can purchase a combo unit) in your vehicle. Maintain at least a half tank of gas throughout the winter season in case your vehicle is stuck for an extended period.

Finally, plan long trips carefully. Listen to the local media report or call law enforcement agencies for the latest road conditions.

Be sure your insurance is current and correct and contact us for any help you may need!

Take the time now to get your home ready for the winter season by following these tips:

Have your heating system checked by a professional annually. This will ensure that your system is working safely and efficiently which, in turn, will save you money. If you heat by wood, clean your fireplace or stove. Have your chimney flue checked for any buildup of creosote and then cleaned to lessen the risk of fire.

Make sure your home is properly insulated. If necessary, insulate walls and attic. This will help you to conserve energy and reduce your homes power demands for heat.

Caulk and weather-strip doors and windowsills to keep cold air out.

Install storm windows or cover windows with plastic from the inside. This will provide an extra layer of insulation, keeping more cold air out.

Inspect and flush your water heater.

Clean gutters. Leaves and other debris will hamper drainage.

Replace batteries of smoke, heat and carbon monoxide detectors. If you did not do it when you set the clocks back, do it now.

To keep pipes from freezing:

Wrap pipes in insulation or layers of old newspapers

Cover the newspapers with plastic to keep out moisture

Let faucets drip a little to avoid freezing

Know how to shut off water valves

Premises-
This covers third-party bodily injury or property damage when there is proven negligence by the insured. For example, it could protect a building owner who failed to salt his walkway in the winter and was sued by a customer who slipped and broke their arm. Or an independent backhoe operator who uses his own machinery to move dirt and damages his clients property such as a car.

Products-
This covers damage caused by an insured's product, such as restaurant food improperly handled that makes customers ill.

Personal Injury and advertising injury-
This coverage is usually together. The personal injury provisions most often address cases of libel, slander and invasion of privacy but the provisions will work for other unanticipated claims. In a highly publicized case where a bouncer's restraint of an unruly bar patron resulted in death and the bar-owner's policy contained an assault and battery exclusion, the insured successfully claimed coverage under the personal injury provision. An advertising injury addresses issues such as aa lawsuit from insured's unwillingness to honor a publicized guarantee, or not carrying enough merchandise to meet demand created by advertising.

Completed Operations-
Coverage usually stops when the work is finished, but this extends coverage for defects that are not discovered until after the policy period. For instance, if a home contractor fails to use the proper materials in building a garage and a year late, the wood warps and foundation sinks, he would look to this portion of the policy for coverage.

Medical Payments-
This provides a limited amount of insurance to pay medical and funeral expenses of third parties accidents that occur at the insured's premises or because of the insured's operations. It is a relatively small and less-restrictive coverage, since the insured does not need to be legally liable for payout. For example, a mother and child are in a drug store waiting for a prescription. While the mother is occupied talking with the pharmacist, the child runs around and falls over his own toy, requiring a visit to the emergency room to check out his cut. Though there may be coverage under the premises provision of the policy if the insured is liable for the injury, there is definitely coverage under medical payments and the prompt treatment without worry over who will pay the bill can keep both the wound and the claim from worsening.</a10:content>

Paycheck Protection

You may think a disability will not happen to you, but the statistics reveal the likelihood is greater than most think. 66,000 disabling injuries occur every day in the U.S. alone. Disability insurance is important because it provides replacem...

<a10:link href="http://www.greatci.com/blog/Paycheck_Protection.aspx" /><a10:content type="html">You may think a disability will not happen to you, but the statistics reveal the likelihood is greater than most think.
66,000 disabling injuries occur every day in the U.S. alone.

Disability insurance is important because it provides replacement income should you become temporarily disabled. You may need this income to pay for ongoing expenses such as your mortgage, car payments, medical expenses, and other daily expenses.

In the last 20 years, deaths due to the “big three” (cancer, heart attack, and stroke) have gone down significantly. But disabilities due to those same three are up dramatically! Things that used to kill, now disable. (National Underwriter, May 2002)

Pay attention to your driving habits. A ticket or accident now follows you for 5 years with many companies. That means you pay for that “incident” for 5 years. And changing companies usually doesn‘t help lower your premium if your driving record is bad.

Consider a higher deductible. This is not a good choice for everyone. But it can be a good strategy for many insureds. In recent years, the discounts for higher deductibles have increased. That means bigger savings for you.

Buy a one-year auto policy. We represent carriers that offer one-year policies. Many agents do not. I believe a one-year policy is a good buy. A one-year policy protects your rates for one year rather than just six months.

Call us to discuss any rate increase that seems unjustified. Many buyers think it is up to them to do their insurance shopping. Not so! We are happy to shop your insurance with our carriers. Insurance companies are always changing underwriting guidelines and pricing. So we know which companies have new attractive programs.

So, as parents get their children ready to head off to school in the fall, there’s one vital “to-do” to add to their list (other than writing that tuition check): a review of their insurance coverage.

It's important to keep in mind that policy language varies from state to state, and there are never "one-size-fits-all" situations, but below is a general guide.

HOMEOWNERS (may vary by state)
Coverage of personal property: Most homeowners policies provide 10 percent of Coverage C (Personal Property) for property owned by an insured while it is at a residence other than the insured residence. That means if the contents of a policyholder’s home are insured for $100,000, a student’s property up to $10,000 would be covered if living in a dormitory – provided the damage is caused by a covered peril and the student meets the definition of an insured.

Certain items, such as jewelry or expensive electronics, may require special coverage, or a “rider.” For apartments or houses off-campus, the same coverage generally applies. See your state’s product guide for specifics. Of course, renters insurance is strongly recommended if a particular policy does not cover a student’s personal property

Liability coverage: There usually is an exclusion for damage to property rented to an insured, so generally damage to a dorm room or apartment would not be covered.

Ensuring adequate coverage: Create an inventory of the items their student is taking to school is a good idea, as is keeping photos of and receipts for the items.

Renters insurance: If a student's needs can't be met under their parents' current policy, don't forget Safeco’s Renters Program. We provide strong protection at a competitive price, as well as fast and easy selling through Quote & Issue. And we've recently made major enhancements to the product in 29 states.

AUTO (may vary by state)

Coverage without a car at school: If the student will continue to drive while at home on school breaks, they should continue to be listed on an insured’s auto policy. If they are attending school more than 100 miles from home, and are not taking a vehicle with them, the policy may qualify for a distant-student discount.

Coverage with a car at school: In most instances, a car registered to the parent and listed on their policy will be covered if used by a listed student away at school. But insureds should make sure that their insurance carrier writes coverage in the college’s state and location. It’s important for agents to know if the insured’s child is taking a car, because the principal location of the vehicle could result in a change in premium.

Driving a friend’s car at school: Students generally would be covered while driving a friend’s car if they are listed on their parents’ policy and do not have regular use of the vehicle. The coverage would likely be secondary in this case, as the carrier for the friend’s vehicle likely would be the primary coverage.

Coverage discounts: In addition to the possible distant-student discount mentioned above, students may qualify for a good-student discount. To qualify, a student must be enrolled in at least four courses per term as a full-time student at an accredited college or university and meet certain academic qualifications. Also, drivers under the age of 21 who complete a driver education course may be eligible for a policy discount.

One of the best tools a business can use to protect its assets is commercial auto insurance.

Understanding insurance can be tricky. One of the first steps toward making an informed decision is to understand coverage and service options. Here are three easy steps to help figure out your commercial auto insurance needs:

1. Choose an insurer with the right combination of price and service. Insurance isn’t just about price. It’s about service, too. How are claims handled? How long will it take to get your vehicle back on the road? Can you get questions answered outside of business hours or online? Know the answers to these questions. Your time is money.

2. Research your policy options. Having the right coverage is important. A standard commercial auto policy generally includes coverage for:

•injuries or damage that you cause;

•your driver’s injuries;

•injuries and damages caused by uninsured or underinsured drivers; and

•damage to or theft of your vehicle(s).

When it comes to damage that you cause, you may be required to purchase certain limits based on who you work for. For instance, if you work for certain home builders, you may be required to carry $1 million in liability limits. Consider how much you are willing to pay out of pocket if your liability in an accident is more than your policy limits.

3. Know how the policy is priced. You can control your insurance costs. To get the best rates, run motor vehicle reports on potential drivers. If you let your insurance lapse, you’ll probably pay more for your next policy. Ask about discounts, including paid-in-full and renewal discounts.

Just like your customers rely on your professional skills, call a professional independent insurance agent who will be in your corner, researching and recommending the best options.

“Commercial auto insurance is complicated, but it is vital to protecting your livelihood,” says Bill Kampf with The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies, one of the largest commercial auto insurers in the country.
</a10:content>

Non Owner Insurance - What You Should Know

Non owner insurance is quite often misunderstood by consumers.
Non owner insurance is quite often misunderstood by consumers. Many believe that a non owner insurance policy will cover you for any vehicle that you may drive, which is not true and can lead to uncovered accidents. In fact, there are many limitations to this type of policy which anyone purchasing it should be aware of.

When coverage does apply with this type of policy, no Comprehensive or Collision coverage applies for any vehicle you drive. In other words, it does not repair damages for the vehicle you are driving. It only provides liability coverage which is bodily injury coverage for others and property damage (coverage to other vehicles) up to the policy limits.

Non owner policies were designed for a person that does not own any vehicles and does not have regular access to a particular vehicle, including work related vehicles. Additionally, you cannot add any drivers to this type of policy. Only the named insured (the person who was issued the policy) will have coverage.

Usually, coverage is not provided for any of the following:

Vehicles registered to the policyholder.

Vehicles owned by the policyholder. (even if not registered in policyholders name)

Vehicles that are work related or are non-private passenger type vehicles.

Vehicles owned by residents of your household.

Vehicles available or loaned to you for use on a regular basis.

If you own a vehicle, non owner insurance is not the type of insurance you should purchase. It only protects you when you are driving an automobile in which you have no ownership of any kind and is not regularly available or work related. Usually, non owner insurance coverage applies an excess to any other insurance policy that may be in effect.

It is also important to know that if you acquire a vehicle after purchasing a non owner policy, you must add that vehicle immediately after acquisition and pay any additional premium if applicable. Many people will purchase a vehicle and forget to add it to their policy thinking that the vehicle is insured.

You may be thinking to yourself, “That’s very limited coverage, what situations will it cover?”

Let’s say you borrow your friend’s vehicle to go to the store and it is not in your name, you do not regularly use it, he does not live with you, it is a private passenger vehicle and you are not using it for work related purposes. Most likely you will be covered. Quite limited right? Keep all the above in mind if you need to purchase a non owner insurance policy.

If you have a vehicle that you regularly drive but is not in your name, you can still purchase a regular auto insurance policy under your name.
Call us at 888-607-2640 and we will be happy to work out the coverage that fits your situation.

(NAPS)—Many consumers are finding they can drive down the cost of car insurance—and the time it takes to select the right policy— by contacting an independent insurance agent or broker.

Because they represent many different insurance companies, independent agents have the flexibility to review rates and coverage from competing carriers and get you the best deal. Plus, they can offer affordable protection for your home, business and other assets. So rather than spending hours gathering quotes from various companies, you can get it done with one simple call or visit to your independent agent or broker. If you’re thinking of contacting an independent agent, here are a few things to consider:

What’s your lifestyle? Many factors determine auto insurance rates, not just vehicle year, make and model. Companies also look at information about you. If you’ve recently moved, gotten married, had a birthday or experienced a similar life milestone, mention this to your independent agent or broker. You may be eligible to save money on your car insurance.

Sweet 16 doesn’t have to be sour. Having a new teenage driver usually means the auto insurance bill will go up, but there are ways to save. An independent agent or broker can find them for you.

How old is your car? You don’t always need the same level of physical damage coverage on older cars as on newer ones. If you drive an older car, your independent agent or broker can advise you what level of coverage makes the most sense. If you want to keep your physical dam-age coverage, consider raising your deductible—that could save you money each year, too.

•Save money on the fun stuff. If you have a motorcycle, boat, RV or other “toy,” you might save money by having it covered by the same company that insures your car. Talk to your independent agent or broker about it.

You may also want to consider separating your homeowner’s policy from your car insurance policy. Bundling your homeowner’s policy with your car insurance doesn’t always save you money. It may, but have your independent agent look at separating the policies— the discount you may have gotten for keeping them together may be outweighed by the lower price another company might have for your car insurance.

To learn more call us at 423-523-9009 or come by the office and share a "cup o java"!

Did You Know?

Bundling your homeowner’s policy with your car insur-ance doesn’t always save you money. It may be wise to have an independent agent look at separating the policies. The discount you got for bundling may be outweighed by a lower competitive price. Fortunately, there are simple steps you can take to protect your home from freezing temperatures, snow and wind, says the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.).

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, much of the country should plan for a cold and blustery winter. In fact, it predicts that the Northeast, Great Lakes region and the Midwest will be much colder than normal from November through March.

"Autumn is the perfect time to winter-proof your home," says I.I.I.'s Vice President of Consumer Affairs, Jeanne Salvatore. "In many cases, winter related disasters can be prevented if you take steps now to protect your home."

The I.I.I. offers the following checklist to help winter-proof your home:

<c />OUTSIDE YOUR HOME

Clean out gutters Remove leaves, sticks and other debris from gutters, so melting snow and ice can flow freely. This can prevent ice damming - a condition where water is unable to drain through the gutters and instead seeps into the house causing water to drip from the ceiling and walls.

Install gutter guards. Available in most hardware and home stores, "gutter guards" prevent debris from entering the gutter and interfering with the flow of water away from the house and into the ground.

Trim trees and remove dead branches Ice, snow and wind could cause weak trees or branches to break - damaging your home or car, as well as injuring someone walking on your property.

Repair steps and handrails to prevent someone from falling and seriously being injured. Broken stairs and banisters can become lethal when covered with snow and ice.

Seal cracks in holes in outside walls and foundations. Use caulking to protect water pipes and make sure that skylights and other roof openings have proper weather stripping to prevent snowmelt from seeping in.

<c />INSIDE YOUR HOME

Keep the house warm. Set the thermostat for at least 65 degrees, since the temperature inside the walls, where the pipes are located, is substantially colder -- a lower temperature will not keep the pipes from freezing.

Add extra insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. If too much heat escapes through the attic, it can cause snow or ice to melt on the roof. Water can then re-freeze, causing more snow and ice to build up. This can result in a collapsed roof, and can contribute to ice damming. Ideally, the attic should be five to ten degrees warmer than the outside air. Well-insulated basements and crawl spaces will also help protect pipes from freezing. You may also consider insulating unfinished rooms such as garages to keep pipes from freezing.

Have the heating system serviced. Have furnaces, boilers and chimneys serviced at least once a year to prevent fire and smoke damage.

Check pipes. Look closely for cracks and leaks and have the pipes repaired immediately. Wrap
exposed pipes with heating tape.

Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system. This will protect them against increased pressures caused by freezing pipes and can help prevent your pipes from bursting.

Make sure that smoke and fire alarms are working properly. Residential fires increase in the winter, so it is important to protect your family with working alarm systems. Also, consider installing a carbon dioxide detector, since a well sealed home can trap this toxic gas.

Learn how to shut the water off and know where your pipes are located. If your pipes freeze, time is of the essence. The quicker you can shut off the water or direct your plumber to the problem, the better chance you have to prevent pipes from bursting.

Hire a licensed contractor to look for structural damage. If damage is discovered, have it repaired now rather than waiting for a problem to occur. Also, ask about ways to prevent water damage due to snow-related flooding. Plastic coatings for internal basement walls, sump pumps and other methods can prevent flood damage to your home and belongings.

If you are going to be away for an extended period, take special care. Turn the water off and/or have the water system drained by a professional to keep pipes from freezing or bursting. Also, hire someone to check your home on a regular basis. If there is a problem, it can be fixed quickly - lessening any damage. Activity at your home will also reduce the likelihood that it will be burglarized.

Standard homeowners policies cover winter-related disasters such as burst pipes, ice dams, wind damage caused by weight of ice or snow, as well as fire-related losses. Damage caused by water should be properly dried and repaired to prevent any potential problem with mold.
Flood damage is excluded from most standard homeowner policies. Coverage is available from the National Flood Insurance Program, but can be purchased through your insurance agent or company representative.

Fact vs. Fiction: Uncovering auto insurance myths

Like a teenager eager to try a new video game, playing before reading the rules, many drivers buy insurance without really understanding what they’re buying.

In the rush to feel “covered,” they can skip the details. That can lead to frustration.

Following are five insurance myths heard by some of the more than 13,000 claims people at Progressive, one of the country’s largest auto insurance companies:

Myth: I bought “full coverage” so everything’s paid for.

Reality: There is no such thing as “full coverage.” In most states, only liability insurance is mandatory. There are a lot of other coverage options out there, so select what you need and can afford based on your personal situation.

Myth: I need three estimates before my wrecked vehicle can be repaired.

Reality: Not necessarily. Very few insurers actually require this, although some might. If you decide to use a shop that’s in an insurance company’s “network” of pre-approved shops you may just have to get an estimate from that shop.

Myth: My insurance premium always increases if I’m involved in an accident.

Reality: It depends. Your rate can increase, decrease or stay the same. The information about your accident is combined with other information about you, your car and your driving history to determine your rate.

Myth: If I lend my car to someone and he/she crashes it, I’m covered.

Reality: Not so fast. If you or your friend don’t have optional physical damage coverages, damage to your vehicle generally won’t be covered.

Myth: If I buy a new car, my auto insurance company automatically knows; and my new car is covered.

Reality: No. Most insurance companies require that you notify them or your agent within a specified number of days. Generally, you have 30 days to add the new vehicle to your policy.

“Insurance can be complicated,” says Chuck Crist of Progressive. “It’s not something people deal with every day. So the more informed you are, the better choices you’ll make.”

If you have never faced these circumstances, you may not have given much thought to the loss of your income. Can you make it 4 weeks without a paycheck? How about 8 weeks? That is a scary thought for most of us; however planning ahead can make all the difference.

Disability Insurance can be purchased as part of a group or as an individual. Check with your employer to see if disability insurance is available through a group plan. It is usually very affordable and all you need to do is sign up to be covered. But what do you do if a group plan is not available. Call your professional agent and ask if you can qualify for protection as an individual. Several factors will determine the specific protection you can buy. Your occupation, your health, and your age all play a part. If you are under 50 years old, you have a greater chance of being disabled for 90 days or more than you do of dying. Be sure to ask for a long term plan that will cover you to age 65. Purchase enough to cover the basics; housing, utilities, food, and transportation.

Then when the unexpected happens; you can stay home and get paid.

Personal Or Commercial Car Insurance: Which Is Right For You?

(NAPS)—If, like many Americans, your family car is also used for purposes that could be considered commercial use, you may want to steer yourself into a chair and look over your insurance policy.

You’ll need to consider buying a commercial policy or making sure that your existing personal auto policy covers the vehicle for business use. Whether or not you need a commercial policy depends on how you use your vehicle and what company you have it insured with. Every company has different guidelines and may surcharge for business-use coverage on a personal auto policy.

If you’re not sure whether business use is covered on your personal policy, it’s important to call your insurance company or agent. The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies has put together these four questions you may want to ask:

How do companies determine commercial use? One definition could include “engaging in transporting goods for compensation or a fee,” which includes pizza or newspaper delivery, catering, door-to-door consulting services, landscaping or snowplowing services, logging business, day care/church van services or farm-to-market delivery. People who do these kinds of work should consider purchasing a commercial vehicle policy.

Do you need more liability coverage than a personal auto policy provides? Generally, a commercial auto policy offers higher limits of liability, but less or no coverage in areas that are typically not associated with commercial auto risks.

Do you need special coverage for situations encountered while conducting business? Commercial auto policies usually offer these coverages, and they’re normally not available with personal auto policies. These include hired and nonowned auto coverage and coverage for towing a trailer for business use.

Do you need to list any employees as drivers? Commercial auto policies allow you to list anyone that you employ. You don’t have that option with a personal auto policy. In general, you’ll need commercial auto coverage if the vehicle you use is owned by a corporate partnership or driven by employees, or if it’s used to haul tools or equipment weighing more than 500 pounds, make deliveries or heavy enough to require state or federal filings.

“But officer, it wasn’t my fault”. There was a slick spot and ………………….

“What do you mean, it’s not all covered? I have insurance, right? What do you mean it’s not enough?”

With any luck, you will have never endured this dilemma. However, you could if your liability limits are not high enough. The property damage or injury you cause with your automobile could bring more than aggravation. The State of Tennessee requires automobile liability limits of $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, and $15,000 property damage. This is far too little in today’s era of expensive cars and rising hospital costs. Paid for an aspirin there lately? Many vehicles on the road exceed $50,000, but your basic policy has only $15,000 coverage. A few days in ICU at the local hospital following injuries from an accident could easily reach $100,000 plus. There’s another aspirin! Guess who pays the amount over your limits? That’s right, you do!

So what limits should you carry? Ask your Professional Agent about your limits and you will probably hear the following: All you can get, or all you can afford. Don’t try to save money by carrying lower limits of liability. Liability coverage is the least expensive of any coverage you can buy. So get the highest limits you can and save money by raising your deductible. If you have an accident that damages an expensive vehicle or puts someone in the hospital with large medical bills, you will be glad you did.

Stay home and get paid? Maybe!

We’ll talk about that next time.

Lookout! That car is going to hit us! “Thank goodness I have insurance.”

The fact is, each and every day we take risks. Some are simple. “Honey, don’t forget the bread and milk when you go to the store”. Others…more complex: such as a tornado, a hurricane or perhaps the “Blizzard of 93”. But these things can be a part of our day whether we like it or whether we are prepared. How we handle the risks we face determines our peace of mind and our ability to “weather the storm” financially.

Sharing risks with someone else can reduce worry and protect our financial well-being. Insurance is a term we often hear yet loosely understand. In simplest terms, it is simply a way to share the risks we face everyday in our lives such as the loss of a car, a home, or our income.

The idea is not new. The first contract is said to have been written in 1347 in Genoa, Italy. By the 1800’s Lloyds of London was a thriving modern insurance company. In America the roots go back to Charleston, SC when the first U.S. Company was founded in 1735.

So if you have purchased insurance for anything you own, you have “passed the risk”. This risk is now assumed by the insurance company which is paid for by your premium. Now you’re asking yourself, “Do I have enough insurance”? Is it the right kind? If not… perhaps you should.

We’ll talk about that next time when you think about “passing the risk”.
